Land Rover service and repair in Midrand

From a routine service to air suspension, timing chains and gearbox work. If it carries a Land Rover badge and it is out of warranty, this is what we do all day. ZMC Automotive Repairs services and repairs the full range: Defender, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar.

The jobs that bring people here

Air suspension. A vehicle sitting on its bump stops in the morning is normally a leaking air spring, a tired compressor or a valve block, not the whole system. Diagnosing which one is the difference between a manageable repair and a very large invoice.

Timing chains. On several of these engines a rattle on cold start is an early warning that is far cheaper to act on than to ignore. Left alone it becomes an engine.

EGR, DPF and turbo faults. Limp mode and a warning light on the diesels. Often recoverable without replacing the expensive component, if it is tested properly first.

Cooling systems. Overheating on these engines does expensive damage quickly. Worth taking seriously the first time the gauge moves.

Also handled

  • Scheduled and interim servicing
  • Brakes, discs and pads
  • Gearbox and differential repair
  • Clutch and driveline
  • Steering and suspension bushes
  • Pre-purchase inspections
  • Roadworthy preparation

Jaguar service and repair in Midrand

Jaguar shares a great deal of its engineering with Land Rover, which is why one workshop can properly cover both. ZMC Automotive Repairs services and repairs Jaguar XE, XF, XJ, F-Type, F-Pace and E-Pace, with a focus on vehicles out of the manufacturer warranty period.

Common Jaguar work

Ingenium engine issues. The four cylinder Ingenium diesels and petrols are shared across Jaguar and Land Rover. Timing chain stretch and oil pump belt wear are known weaknesses, far cheaper to address early. A rattle on cold start is the signal.

DPF and EGR. The classic short-trip diesel problem. Warning light, reduced power, and a dealer quote for replacement when the component can often be recovered.

Cooling systems. Coolant loss with no visible leak needs pressure testing rather than topping up and hoping.

Electronics. Infotainment, modules and intermittent electrical faults, needing diagnostic equipment that actually talks to the vehicle properly.

Also handled

  • Scheduled and interim servicing
  • Brakes and suspension
  • Gearbox and driveline
  • Air conditioning
  • Pre-purchase inspections
  • Roadworthy preparation

Land Rover and Jaguar diagnostics in Midrand

A fault code tells you which circuit reported a problem. It does not tell you which part failed. The difference between those two things is most of the money people waste on these vehicles.

Why a code reader is not a diagnosis

Replacing the part named in the code is the single most common way owners spend money without fixing anything. The light goes off, comes back a week later, and the next workshop starts again.

Proper diagnosis means reading live data, testing the circuit, and confirming the fault before anything is ordered. It takes longer at the start and costs less by the end.

Multiple warning lights at once almost always point at a single underlying cause, often electrical supply or a communication fault between modules. Chasing each light separately is expensive and usually wrong.

What we diagnose

  • Engine management and limp mode
  • Air suspension height and compressor faults
  • ABS, traction and stability warnings
  • Gearbox and transfer case warnings
  • Battery drain and charging faults
  • Intermittent electrical problems
  • Infotainment and module communication
  • Pre-purchase inspection reports

Land Rover and Jaguar parts supply in Midrand

Parts sourced for the full Land Rover and Jaguar range, whether we are fitting them or you are collecting. Send the VIN and you get the right part the first time.

Genuine, OEM or aftermarket

These three words get used loosely and the difference matters to your invoice.

Genuine parts come in manufacturer packaging through the franchise supply chain. Highest cost, no argument about fitment.

OEM parts are made by the same supplier that produces the part for the manufacturer, sold in that supplier's own packaging. Frequently the same component at a lower price.

Quality aftermarket parts are made by an independent manufacturer. On some components this is a sensible saving. On others it is a false economy, and we will say so. You choose, we price the options.

Commonly supplied

  • Service kits, filters and oils
  • Air suspension springs and compressors
  • Timing chain kits and oil pumps
  • Brake discs, pads and sensors
  • Cooling components and water pumps
  • Suspension arms and bushes
  • Turbochargers, EGR and DPF components
  • Sensors, switches and modules

Why owners leave the dealer once the warranty ends

A Land Rover or Jaguar outside its service plan is an expensive vehicle to own at franchise labour rates. The car has not changed. The invoice has. Most owners reach a point where a routine service or a suspension fault costs more than the job is worth to them, and they start looking for someone who knows the vehicle properly but does not carry a dealership overhead.

That is the entire reason this workshop exists. Same vehicles, same diagnostic equipment, same standard of work, without the showroom attached to the bill.

We will also tell you when a job is not worth doing. On a high mileage vehicle there is a point where the sensible answer is to stop spending, and you are better off hearing that before the strip down than after it.

What you get

  • A written quote before any work begins
  • Manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment, not a generic code reader
  • Genuine, OEM or quality aftermarket parts, your choice, priced clearly
  • Work recorded in your service book
  • A straight answer on what is urgent and what can wait

How it works

1. Tell us the symptom

WhatsApp the model, year, mileage and what the vehicle is doing. Photos of the dashboard or the fault help. We will tell you straight away whether it is something we can look at.

2. We diagnose, then quote

The vehicle comes in, we test it properly and you get a written quote. No work starts until you approve it.

3. You collect, with the detail

You get told what was replaced, what we found and what to watch. The work goes into your service book.

Your rights as a South African motorist

Does servicing here void your warranty?

No. Since the Guidelines for Competition in the South African Automotive Aftermarket came into effect on 1 July 2021, a South African motorist may have an in-warranty vehicle serviced or repaired by an independent service provider without the manufacturer automatically voiding the warranty. Motorists may also choose whether original or non-original parts are fitted, in or out of warranty. Conditions apply: the work must be recorded properly, and a manufacturer may still decline a specific warranty claim if the independent workshop's work or the parts used are found to have caused the fault.

What the guidelines give you

  • Use an independent service provider during the in-warranty period and keep your warranty
  • Choose whether original or non-original parts are fitted, in or out of warranty
  • Source those parts from a supplier of your choice
  • Independent workshops can access the technical information needed to work on modern vehicles

The conditions that matter

The guidelines are not legislation, they are Competition Commission guidance. Work must be recorded in the service book, a manufacturer can still decline a specific claim if the independent workshop caused the fault, and a service plan is a separate contract from a warranty. Ask us how we handle the service book before you book.

Where we work

The workshop is in Halfway House, Midrand, within a short drive of most of the northern suburbs and the Centurion side of the N1. If you are not sure whether it is worth the trip, phone first. We would rather tell you over the phone that we cannot help than waste your morning.

Questions we get asked

Does servicing at an independent workshop void my Land Rover or Jaguar warranty?

No, not automatically. Since the Guidelines for Competition in the South African Automotive Aftermarket took effect on 1 July 2021, a South African motorist may have an in-warranty vehicle serviced by an independent workshop without the manufacturer automatically voiding the warranty, provided the work is recorded correctly and appropriate parts are used. See warranty and your rights above.

Do you work on vehicles that are still under warranty?

Yes. Work is recorded in your service book and appropriate parts are used, in line with the Competition Commission's automotive aftermarket guidelines.

Which Land Rover and Jaguar models do you cover?

Defender, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Evoque and Velar on the Land Rover side. Jaguar XE, XF, XJ, F-Type, F-Pace and E-Pace on the Jaguar side. If your model is not listed, ask.

Do you charge for a quote?

A quote is free. If the fault needs diagnostic time on the vehicle to identify properly, we will tell you the diagnostic fee upfront before you commit.

How much does a Land Rover or Jaguar service cost at an independent workshop?

It depends on the model, the engine and whether it is an interim or a major service. Independent specialists generally work at lower labour rates than franchise dealers, and you can choose between genuine, OEM and quality aftermarket parts, which moves the number further. Send us the model, year and mileage and we will quote in writing rather than guess.

My Range Rover is sitting low in the morning. Is that the whole air suspension?

Usually not. It is most often a single leaking air spring, a worn compressor or a valve block. The system needs to be tested to find which. Replacing the lot without diagnosing is how a moderate repair turns into a very expensive one.

What is the Ingenium timing chain problem?

Certain Ingenium engines suffer timing chain stretch and oil pump belt wear. The early symptom is a rattle on cold start. Addressed early it is a contained repair. Ignored, it can end the engine.

What should I do when a warning light comes on?

Note whether the vehicle is driving normally. A steady light usually means get it checked soon. A flashing light, loss of power, overheating or a red warning means stop driving and phone. Continuing to drive with a red warning or an overheating engine is how a repair becomes an engine replacement.

Do you charge for diagnostics?

Diagnostic time on the vehicle is charged, and we tell you the fee before you commit. It buys you an accurate answer instead of a guess, and it is deducted against the repair in many cases. Ask when you book.

Why do you need my VIN?

Land Rover and Jaguar change specification during a model run. Two vehicles of the same model and year can take different parts. The VIN identifies your exact build so the part fits the first time.

What are your opening hours and where are you located?

Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00, Saturday 08:00 to 13:00, closed Sunday and public holidays. We are at Unit 9, Crescent Heights, 241 James Crescent, Halfway House, Midrand, 1685, Gauteng. See contact and directions below.
